Description
Green Pseudopossum (Chlorothera symbiotica)
Length: 50 centimetres.
Weight: 2.5 kilograms.
Diet: Omnivore, feeds on insects, small reptiles, dinosaur eggs, fallen fruit and soft vegetation.
This mammal is the only remaining marsupial species on Skull Island, being descended from Cretaceous ancestors. Acting much like an opossum, it is a generalized forager and opportunistic omnivore. Their fur hosts a symbiotic kind of algae, much like that of a sloth, which affords them some camouflage in the undergrowth. The females will often groom this from their own fur into the fur of their joeys, thus transmitting the symbiote to the next generation. It has been determined that individuals without this alga are generally less healthy, so it may afford some antibacterial benefits to their hosts. Pseudopossums are most common in well-vegetated areas where their green shade does them good.
