A giant descendant of today's shrews? Scary!

Still, I could kill a cat-sized unarmoured mammal easily - stamp on it and break all its ribs, break its neck with my hands... Certainly a big pack of them could kill me, but they'd probably lose one or two in the process.

well, not if any of these got to your ankles first, as they aim for the tendons and major arteries with those big teeth. If you reached out with a hand to grab it, it would simply slice your wrist open, if you went after it with your foot, as soon as it came down, it would slice your achille's heel.

That'd work better if they were eusocial and so didn't value their own lives. Without eusociality, there'd be a limit on the size of prey they could take - they probably wouldn't attack a human, because the risk of being trodden on would be too high for each individual.

Reminds me of an old 50's Sci-Fi B Movie entitled "The Killer Shrews".

The shrews in that movie looked a bit more like dogs (I think thats because they put on a costume on a dog for some of the chase scenes).
