My portrayal of the Basilosaurus, portrayed in its natural habitat, shallow sea. That's right, forget Walking With Beasts, Basilosaurus was a nearshore predator.

I like the name Basilosaurus. Who wouldn't want to called "King Lizard". Plus, it seems a bit more fitting than you might think. With its long, serpentine body, one could confuse it with a mosasaur, like Tylosaurus. Of course, given if you haven't seen the tail.

I can only imagine the ominousness of the sight of a dark, sinuous shape weaving its way around the coastline. If I were a terrestrial Eocene animal, I would stay on land forever.

Eh, I'm too used to Basilosaurus myself.

Something i've wondered for a while, would such an elongate animal actually need tail flukes? They seem sort of redundant, particularly when you see it as sinuous as it is here.

There is also some evidence that it could undulate from side-to-side too, so yes, it was very sinuous.

Interesting stuff, especially the ambidextrous spine.
